I was in a staff meeting. 19:03:44 From bais_ashley to All panelists : collaboration 19:03:46 From Nikki : common planning for the success of students 19:03:57 From Nikki : how do we know they have learned it, what do we teach them? 19:04:03 From Stephanie Richardson : We come together to problem solve learning issues, behaviors, meet the needs of all students 19:04:08 From Nikki : measureable goals 19:04:11 From Brad Verneau : Sharing information to grow as teachers. 19:04:22 From MH3 : Build a safe place for solve school-realted problems 19:04:25 From Kathryn Mansfield : Working collaboratively with each other to help students become successful in all subject areas 19:04:26 From Cindy Black : My school used PLC to help teachers learn from experts and each other to reach a common goal to serve stuents better in specific ways. 19:04:28 From Leslie Theurer : collaborative learning to improve student and staff resiliency 19:04:32 From Kendall : Share ideas and strategies. 19:04:32 From Jodi : learning 19:04:32 From Leslie Theurer : learning 19:04:33 From Nikki : learning 19:04:34 From Stephanie Richardson : learning 19:04:34 From amy.witt : learning 19:04:35 From bais_ashley to All panelists : learning 19:04:39 From Nikki : students 19:04:42 From Jodi : every one 19:04:44 From Stephanie Richardson : Both teachers and students 19:04:45 From bais_ashley to All panelists : members 19:04:48 From amy.witt : our learning 19:04:51 From kherbert to All panelists : Teachers and students 19:04:59 From kasandrasaiki : Teacher learning 19:05:03 From kasandrasaiki : In our. case 19:05:15 From tdavis to All panelists : Staff coming together for a common goal. 19:05:17 From Jodi : Reminds me of House 19:06:01 From Cindy Black : That’s still happening. 19:08:33 From Nikki : engaging in inquiry that includes reflection. self reflection is a big deal to me in my job 19:10:39 From rammerman : Put what they learned into practice 19:10:40 From Leslie Theurer : aspiration root for one another’s success 19:10:43 From Cindy Black : PLC done right is grassroots, not top-down. 19:10:43 From JoEllen Walters : educators talk with one another about their practice, share knowledge, observe one another, and root for one another’s success 19:10:58 From Brad Verneau : cheer each other on!!!! 19:11:02 From amy.witt : “…another cycle of reflection, discussion, and assessment…the learning is ongoing.” 19:11:09 From Stephanie Richardson : Confirmations: Having a shared vision, visiting others’ classrooms Aspirations: physical and human capacities 19:11:17 From Kathryn Mansfield : collaboration; reflection and discussion, learning is ongoing, areas where they need to learn new content or instructional strategies 19:11:37 From Cameron Metzgar to All panelists : take webinars together 19:13:54 From Nikki : LOL 19:13:54 From Diana Kurka : Ha ha ha! 19:14:01 From Nikki : Luckily ours arent like that 19:15:20 From kasandrasaiki : OMG my kids love snapshot filters its so fun :D 19:17:43 From Leslie Theurer : it is difficult when every PLC is admin driven with admins desired result 19:17:46 From Stephanie Richardson : I’ve had the chance to be part of effective and ineffective PLCs, and would agree with this list…particularly the focus on teaching and not learning 19:17:58 From Rita Short : no collaboration between teams 19:18:08 From Cindy Black : Effective PLC is enegizing; ineffective PLC is demoralizing. 19:18:18 From kasandrasaiki : I am the only science and math secondary teacher at my school 19:18:18 From Nikki : we are so lucky that our admin does not impose. we have guidelines and a common goal but not micro managed 19:18:21 From amy.witt : I like the idea of separating true PLC time from the nuts and bolts of talking about textbooks, field trips, etc. 19:18:24 From kasandrasaiki : so I need guidance 19:18:30 From kherbert to All panelists : only looking at student data and not how to improve teaching 19:18:35 From Brad Verneau : I think that due to time impositions, people are resistant to new knowledge. 19:18:38 From Kathryn Mansfield : My school doesn’t have a PLC group, but we do have a PMF team that has representatives from each group of grade levels. We have fallen prey to some of these. 19:18:39 From tdavis to All panelists : Often times teachers are separated by grade-bands, so teachers do not get the opportunity to collaborate together. 19:18:43 From JoEllen Walters : Collaboration with only parter teacher and no other input. 19:19:16 From Nikki : we meet in different topics... intervention, grade level, subject area, etc 19:19:21 From kasandrasaiki : Im all ears I think its important we all listen and try to use the information given even if its not something that is directly in our content area or age group 19:19:31 From tdavis : Often times teachers are separated by grade-bands, so teachers do not get the opportunity to collaborate together. 19:20:21 From Leslie Theurer : The trust and belief that collectively we can be successful 19:20:30 From Diana Kurka : This will be another of the assignment choices if you are taking the webinar for credit. 19:20:46 From Nikki : yes, supporting and believing in each other. A LOT of trust. 19:23:01 From Cindy Black : Growth mindset should mean removing barriers created by attitude. 19:23:11 From kasandrasaiki : Agreed cindi 19:23:11 From Nikki : agree, Cindy 19:23:35 From kasandrasaiki : its fun to watch them do things more and more on their own 19:31:12 From Brad Verneau : I think that I establish trust well. I build an environment where we talk openly, honestly,. and constructively about our behaviors 19:31:13 From Nikki : I think mine is trust. I back up what i say to them and I make sure that if I say I will do something I do it. Also, it goes into being able to trust the relationship- the students know they can trust me to be stand at the door each morning and say hi and say their name, and make a connection. They trust me more than just my word. 19:31:29 From David Nagel : Nikki-Thanks for sharing... 19:31:40 From Nikki : we have a classroom respect agreement, instead of "rules" and we all decided on them 19:32:28 From kasandrasaiki : I am a village teacher so we have to teach 6 classes. I developed my own class Criminology and criminal Justice. I am able to be very dynamic with my students because I am CONSTANTLY researching criminals and court cases. I listened to a dateline podcast with my kids and we really invested into it. Took pages of notes worth of evidence. We dove into who all the players were in the episode and decided who was guilty and non guilty. The kids and I were so invested in that episode and we still have little inside jokes and they still bring up key vocab. 19:33:11 From Rita Short : I am interested in this topic, good to think about! 19:33:15 From Kathryn Mansfield : Out of the 4, my biggest is trust. I have done my best and continue to learn the culture that my kids have. I am learning their language and use it as often as I can when I interact with them. I interact and play with them during gym and PE time. I talk to them as if they are humans and I let them know the standards that I hold them to. 19:33:36 From kasandrasaiki : PE is a very important class to build trust in way to go!! 19:34:02 From Stephanie Richardson : I have the opportunity to team-teach 4th grade in a classroom with 50 students. Because it is so large, we do virtually all of our teaching in small groups. This has led to immediacy is my most natural trait because each of the small groups allow me to get to know the students and help them right then. 19:34:18 From David Nagel : For sure Steph.... 19:34:48 From Leslie Theurer to All panelists : Trust is by far the easiest and strongest area for me. So funny, Oh Captain, My Captain is what one of my students says to me every day. 19:35:15 From David Nagel : i struggle watching sometimes thinking he is no longer with us… 19:35:24 From Nikki : same 19:35:57 From kasandrasaiki : That was a really sad day :( 19:36:13 From Leslie Theurer : Trust is by far the easiest and strongest area for me. So funny, Oh Captain, My Captain is what one of my students says to me every day. 19:37:17 From kasandrasaiki : In the village it is really important to have trust. We all get really close. 19:37:35 From Kathryn Mansfield : Agreed! 19:38:25 From Kathryn Mansfield : It often the hardest to get from my kids, too. Teacher turn over is high here, so they try hard to push and push, and once they trust that I’m not going anywhere, I begin to see a whole new side to them. 19:45:00 From Leslie Theurer : I really appreciate this table! 19:45:01 From Nikki : can't you be in more than one? 19:45:26 From Leslie Theurer : I feel like I am in a different place on some days. 19:45:32 From Nikki : in more than one table i mean. 19:45:33 From Kathryn Mansfield : I feel like I’m trying to figure out where I fit in this puzzle, and I’m still not sure. 19:45:46 From Rita Short : Very insightful! I love what you said about not being afraid to share ideas with those we work closely with. 19:45:48 From kasandrasaiki : Its a grey area for me 19:45:53 From amy.witt : I agree with you, Leslie. I feel more successful on some days. 19:45:55 From Nikki : because for me it depends on the class, set of students, the day, etc SO many variables. 19:46:03 From Stephanie Richardson : It seems like the trait of listening is missing from the box. While sharing is great, sometimes a teacher who may be loved by everyone struggles to listen to the ideas of others 19:46:09 From kasandrasaiki : I am not optimistic all the time 19:46:22 From kasandrasaiki : But I do care about my kids 19:46:37 From Leslie Theurer : Nor I, Kasandra 19:46:41 From Stephanie Richardson : I also feel like I move from box to box depending on my day 19:46:58 From Nikki : "everything is awesome" 19:47:40 From Nikki : yes we are 90% military 19:48:11 From kasandrasaiki : In the village kids move back and forth to town and there are sometimes when kids move that I just get so sad and am attatched 19:49:11 From Leslie Theurer : I feel I am in the blue a lot lately. Would love more orange!! 20:00:13 From Kathryn Mansfield : I think sometimes I forget that we as teachers have to keep learning too. As in, I forget to take adults into consideration, too. 20:01:50 From Stephanie Richardson : While I’m not an administrator, it seems like there can be a huge challenge to find the time to help teachers being successful 20:02:05 From Nikki : honestly I had one colleague who came to me a lot with qusetions and i had to check my attitude because at first i was like COME ON!! 20:02:16 From Nikki : But then i was like, wait, he TRUSTS you to help him. 20:02:29 From JoEllen Walters : It’s hard to want to keep trying the new approach, when the first few trials don’t feel successful. 20:02:58 From Stephanie Richardson : Exactly! That lack of consistency is certainly part of the time problem 20:02:59 From Leslie Theurer : haha 20:03:01 From Kathryn Mansfield : Agreed JoEllen 20:03:06 From Holly Rinehart to All panelists : 🤣 20:03:15 From Nikki : i had to change my thinking completely and not treat it as an inconvenience but more as someone really needing my help adn trusting ME enough for that help. 20:03:38 From amy.witt : I feel like we are introduced to great strategies but have little time to follow up on them nor time to collaborate about how we are using the new approach 20:03:47 From Nikki : Yes amy! 20:03:51 From Stephanie Richardson : I agree, Amy! 20:04:03 From Nikki : Ive been in schools where change is so frequent that we dont allow things to fail or succeed 20:05:01 From Kathryn Mansfield : It’s hard to have an agreed upon set of strategies when particular teachers don’t like taking new things that require more effort when their plate is already overflowing (which is valid, but not always beneficial for our kids). 20:07:42 From Nikki : Yes, we set norms in each meeting. We have the usual norms but we are able to add to them as needed, that way its a safe place to talk (in PLCs and other meetings) 20:08:35 From Rita Short : Amen!!!! 20:09:40 From Rita Short : I’d love to observe my co-workers teach more! 20:09:45 From Holly Rinehart to All panelists : curious how micro teaching would compare to Instructional Tours 20:10:06 From Kathryn Mansfield : Modeling is what I could benefit from the most. I’ve heard it before that it’s best practice for improving teaching. So now I just have get over myself and do it (haha!) 20:10:23 From kasandrasaiki : Modeling also helped me a lot back when I was student teaching 20:10:49 From kasandrasaiki : Also my principal does really no pressure walk throughs with good feedback 20:10:49 From Diana Kurka : Holly everyone who has done the micro teaching could not believe how beneficial it was - even if no one else was involved! 20:10:50 From David Nagel : Holly—Micro teaching is video taping and watching and reflecting with peers or individually… Not sure what instructional tours are… 20:10:56 From Nikki : For me it would be modeling but I really already try doing that. I want to see and hear other ways that teachers are doing the same things 20:11:10 From Nikki : I love borrowing tools from others through seeing them teach 20:11:18 From rammerman : I love it when my admins model teaching techniques during our staff meetings. 20:11:30 From kasandrasaiki : I had to tape myself or my students do and when I am nervous I talk REALLY fast 20:11:46 From bais_ashley to All panelists : Social Persuasion drives our influences and actions by others 20:12:03 From Brad Verneau : As a nontraditional teacher modeling was THE way that I learned to teach. Now I love doing it and having it done for me! 20:12:37 From bais_ashley to All panelists : Time? When do we have time when we are mandated to only meet monthly for 45 mins? Admins can go in rooms but when can teachers find this quality time? 20:12:58 From Stephanie Richardson : I think the psychological factors have a large impact on many of the other factors. Having emotional issues impacts a lot. 20:13:07 From kasandrasaiki : I like the phrase bing coachable 20:13:10 From kasandrasaiki : being 20:13:14 From Nikki : kasandra, i have as well LOL i need to slow down 20:13:33 From kasandrasaiki : Or playing with my hands 20:13:39 From Leslie Theurer : Unfortunately I am in a fight or flight mode. I feel that new administration has been so very negative that many of us are actually leaving Alaska. Last year I felt successful because we were a strong team. This year 1/2 of our staff left and we do not support each other and it is affecting my beliefs in my own abilities. 20:13:40 From amy.witt : I think that all are very inter-related. If I can see something modeled and then feel supported when I implement it, I feel more successful and am better able to ignore the fear that I might fail 20:14:03 From kasandrasaiki : Along with being coachable you need a coach that does not scare you into fight mode 20:14:24 From kasandrasaiki : Physiological factor 20:15:52 From Leslie Theurer : Thank you Kasandra for pointing that out. That is where I am intimidated and it is beating me up 20:16:07 From kasandrasaiki : Im sorry to hear that Leslie :( 20:16:11 From Kathryn Mansfield : :( 20:16:21 From kasandrasaiki : Our kids are tough enough critics 20:16:32 From Kathryn Mansfield : #true 20:16:47 From Leslie Theurer : truth! 20:17:21 From kbrumfield to All panelists : :) 20:18:01 From Kathryn Mansfield : Do you have recommendations for books to continue content for middle school ELA? 20:18:07 From Rita Short : thank you! 20:18:12 From Kathryn Mansfield : Specifically for teaching writing 20:18:18 From Melissa Crane : Survey 1 Link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/N6YWVLC 20:18:25 From bais_ashley to All panelists : Thank you so much! Very insightful and gave me an opportunity to reflect! 20:19:09 From Kathryn Mansfield : Thank you! 20:19:39 From Holly Rinehart to All panelists : possible to shift the last webinar (spring break)? 20:19:57 From JoEllen Walters : Woohoo! I’ll be emailing you! 20:21:15 From amy.witt : Thanks for the good information! 20:21:17 From kasandrasaiki : Thanks Dave! 20:21:23 From kasandrasaiki : Is he teaching all of them? 20:21:47 From Diana Kurka : Yes! 20:22:13 From kasandrasaiki : Cool thanks Diane! 20:22:23 From Nikki : what about if this is for credit? dont you need to be "live" on the webinar? 20:22:27 From bais_ashley to All panelists : If you watch a recording, would the credit still be available to participants? 20:22:34 From Diana Kurka : Yes! 20:23:40 From Stephanie Richardson : I might prefer to keep the schedule, as I planned around a lot of other classes 20:23:43 From Leslie Theurer : Unfortunately for me I will have 20 kids in Europe at the end of the month 20:24:02 From MH3 : keep the date, it is only 2 hours!!! 20:24:18 From MH3 : and the webinars are recorded! 20:24:31 From Diana Kurka : Yes and there will be lots of time in-between to complete course work. 20:24:59 From Rita Short : We just need to complete the handout notes? Or is there an additional assignment? 20:25:19 From Diana Kurka : Stay online Rita, I will be sharing soon! 20:27:57 From Rita Short : Will we get an email with a link to the Discussion Forum? 20:29:52 From Melissa Crane : Resource Page: https://asdn.org/webinar-resource-page-evidence-based-practices-to-enhance-student-learning-spring-2020/ Credit Course Link: http://www.cvent.com/d/vhqym1 Survey 1 Link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/N6YWVLC
