19:49:23 From stephen.byers : Do you feel that overall the USA is over identifying students in reading for special education? 20:04:12 From Jcochran : Stephen, I come and go with that question. I just think that mandated programs for intervention might be out dated and we are giving students a steady dosage of below grade level instruction. If students are not getting it with those programs, then, definitely we are missing something. That is why data is so important, but if they are not making progress, they need to be referred without delay 20:04:32 From dana.wyatt : You mentioned that we are using too much data. What type of data should we be looking at to determine who is the most vulnerable reader? 20:06:08 From stephen.byers : Do you feel that poor math skills are linked to reading issues? Connection? 20:06:50 From kelley.harvey : A lot of the strategies I have researched for students with dyslexia are very kinesthetic (sand trays, playdough, tactile letters, etc). Is this on the right track? 20:09:03 From Jcochran : I have a student with dyslexia and she does very well in math. I test her orally to avoid number reversal (15 instead of 51, etc) 20:09:54 From stephen.byers : How does age play into a child learning to read. I find some student cannot read in 3rd grade and go home for the summer to come back with huge progress in the fall. Maturity? 20:10:27 From Alaska : What is the evaluation process to determine dyslexia other than a brain scan? 20:12:06 From Karen Paul : What do you think about a student who learns to read in two languages around 2nd grade 20:13:32 From stephen.byers : In sped we are told that Dyslexia is a medical assessment term. In school we call it a learning disability. 20:15:22 From dianakurka : These are also Options to explore for those taking the webinar for credit. 20:19:00 From sheila.keller : Thank you Jan. 20:19:03 From dianakurka : dianakurka@gci.net 20:19:59 From Kaci Tauriainen : Thanks, Jan! 20:20:17 From Rafe : Thanks!! 20:21:58 From Rebecca : Enlightening information about dyslexia.
