Strengthening Indigenous Learning and Academics (SILA) Project in BSSD

This project is funded by an Alaska Native Education Grant from the US Department of Education. The funding is awarded to the Bering Strait School District (BSSD).

Project Objectives and Activities:

• Build Cultural Connections for Student Success. BSSD-created and Kawerak-reviewed cultural videos with lesson plans will be posted to AkPLN. The grant will also increase cultural demonstrations for students and all staff to learn about Inupiat, Yup’ik and Siberian Yupik culture and culturally-appropriate practices.

• Improve Mathematics and Language Arts Achievement. Teachers will explore research-based effective learning strategies and learn how to make the best use of new mathematics and language arts curriculum materials. BSSD classroom-based model lesson videos will be produced and used for teacher collaboration and professional development.

• Increase Positive School Behaviors and Graduation Success. 100% of administrators, teachers and aides will learn scientifically–based school-wide and classroom positive behavioral support programs.

ASDN will provide administrative and technical assistance, and will help provide the professional learning for BSSD teachers.
