ASDN Course FAQ
ASDN offers 500-level professional development courses approved by accredited Alaska universities and the State of Alaska for teacher recertification. These upper-division courses are designed for professional learning and typically cannot be applied toward degree programs or used as 600-level coursework.
Important: Before enrolling, verify your certification requirements through the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development’s Teacher Certification webpage. If you are planning to use a course for salary advancement, confirm its eligibility with your district’s professional development department.
Enrollment Requirements
You must hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher to register for 500-level courses. When completing your registration, select your highest degree earned (BA/BS, MA, or higher). Do not register without meeting this prerequisite.
How to Get Started
- Select your course. Click and complete the registration form and payment
- Review your confirmation email. It has the course details and start instructions
- If you don’t see the confirmation email, check your spam/junk folder.
Registration Flexibility
Yes, you can register anytime! Most courses are ongoing with flexible enrollment.
Some courses have specific start/end dates or one-year completion windows.
It is your responsibility to check the course details and due dates before you register.
Important Policies
Cancellations
Review your ASDN course registration confirmation Terms and Conditions for your specific course. Here are some general guidelines:
- Within 7 days: Cancellation fee applies (see confirmation email for amount)
- After 7 days: No refunds issued
- Some courses are non-refundable
- No transfers, extensions, or re-enrollments are available

Minimum Timeframe
Allow up to two weeks for grading and processing after course completion.
You must wait at least 30 days from registration before grades can be submitted.

Financial Aid
ASDN does not offer financial aid or scholarships.
Most military or tribal financial aid programs will not pay for ASDN professional learning courses since they’re not part of a degree program. One exception may be the multicultural and Alaska History classes required for teacher certification.
Tax Information
ASDN does not send out a Form 1098-T because our professional development courses are not applicable towards a degree program.
Keep your registration receipt for tax purposes and consult your tax professional about educator deductions.

Helpful information Teacher Re-certification (Certificate Renewal) in Alaska
To renew a five-year certificate, Alaska teachers must meet the following requirements prior to the expiration date of their certificate:
Six renewal credits
Mandatory training completed in the previous five years
Fingerprint card or Employment Verification
Complete application and fees

Renewal Credit for Alaska Teachers
Six renewal credits are required to renew or reinstate a regular five-year certificate in Alaska. Each of the following equals one renewal credit:
One semester hour of credit earned from a regionally or nationally accredited university or college
One and a half quarter hours of credit earned from a regionally or nationally accredited university or college
One continuing education unit, with a minimum of 15 contact hours, from an approved provider
One micro-credential, with a minimum of 15 contact hours, from an approved provider

Non-Academic Credit, Continuing Education Units, & Micro-Credential Information
A total of 6 non-academic credits, continuing education units (CEU), or micro credentials, may be used to renew a 5-year certificate.
Approved CEU Organization
ASDN is on DEED’s list of approved CEU organizations. Some of our professional learning may include a certificate of completion that can be submitted for continuing education units. The Department charges a separate fee of $50 per Continuing Education Unit.
Approved Microcredential Organization
ASDN is a division of the Alaska Council of School Administrators (ACSA). ACSA is approved by DEED to grant micro-credentials. Micro-credentials may be used towards recertification. There is no additional fee to DEED for a microcredential.
Reinstatement Requirements in Alaska
If the expiration date on your five-year certificate has passed, teachers have entered a 12-month reinstatement period, and are no longer certified. You may not work in a position requiring a certificate until you have reinstated your certificate. You have exactly 12 months beyond the expiration date on your certificate to submit your application for reinstatement, without having to complete any additional requirements. If your certificate has expired more than 12 months ago, you are no longer in a reinstatement period and are considered an initial application for certification.
