Participants will gain a better understanding on how refugee families arrive, and how to address the social and emotional needs of families and students who are new to America so that families feel connected to the community and students feel empowered to reach their full potential in school. Gain a deeper perspective on how English Language Learners (ELL) cultural and linguistic backgrounds and experiences can help guide instruction and advocacy for these students.
Learn more about supporting ELL students in language development, including the importance of vocabulary as it relates to reading comprehension and building language skills. Participants will investigate a variety of effective ELL instructional strategies and discuss ways to move students from the informal language used in face-to-face communication (BICS) to the academic or formal language (CALP) needed to succeed in school.

Christine Garbe is passionate about supporting students to have positive outcomes in school and life. She has over thirty years of experience as an educator, serving as a teacher, building principal and district office administrator. She is a former director of the Anchorage School District’s English Language Learners Program.
Marvat Obeidi is an Alaskan classroom and reading teacher who has dedicated most of her career to English Language Learners.
